A former Moorish neighbourhood, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the Albaicín has kept its layout of steep, narrow streets and its cármenes, those walled gardens typical of Granada.

History & origins

The Albaicín has occupied the hill facing the Alhambra since the Moorish era, when it formed the residential heart of the medina. After the Reconquista, the Moorish population continued to live there until their expulsion in the 17th century, leaving behind an urban layout that has remained almost intact: narrow streets, dead ends and whitewashed walls.

Heritage & architecture

The cármenes, houses with a walled garden enclosed by high walls, define the neighbourhood's architecture. The Mirador de San Nicolás offers the most iconic view of the Alhambra, with the Sierra Nevada in the background. Old remains of Arab baths and small mosques converted into churches punctuate the urban fabric.

Culture & living traditions

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 alongside the Alhambra and the Generalife, the Albaicín remains inhabited, which sets it apart from a museum-piece site: residents live among their heritage, amid local shops and tourist viewpoints.

Make your way up the steep streets to the Mirador de San Nicolás for sunset over the Alhambra.

Head back down through the side streets, past cármenes and small squares.
